Open House weekend in Chislehurst 2007
In conjunction with London Open House, the Society arranged for a number of our heritage buildings in Chislehurst to be open to the public during the London-wide Open House weekend, 15 and 16 September, and arranged a number of other events.
Nine buildings in Chislehurst were open to the public. These were:
- Camden Place, with restricted access, owing to the Club’s Autumn Meeting. There were two guided tours on each of Saturday and Sunday mornings, with only eight people on each tour. These were fully booked;
- Babington House School. This was open on Saturday morning;
- Farrington School Chapel. This was open on Saturday morning , and Sunday afternoon, and
- Six of our churches, most of which were open throughout the weekend:
- The Church of the Annunciation, where there was an exhibition of old images of Chislehurst. The tower was open;
- Christ Church;
- The Methodist Church, though only on Saturday evening for Roy Hopper’s talk – see below;
- St Mary’s;
- St Nicholas’, and
- St Patrick’s.
Sixty people came to the Methodist Church on Saturday to hear Roy Hopper’s illustrated interesting and informative talk on “The History of Chislehurst showing its development through its historic buildings and spaces”.
Roy also prepared a self-guided walk around the most interesting architecture in Chislehurst. This had been widely distributed before the weekend. Click here to see a copy.
We were pleased to see so many people taking advantage of the fine weather over the weekend to see the buildings. A large number of people passed by the Society’s stall outside Sainsbury’s to pick up the self-guide walk – quite a number of them from outside the Chislehurst area.
We had a number of entries for the Open House photo competition. Three prizes were awarded. See the winning pictures by clicking here.
We hope that Society members who participated in the events felt it worthwhile – we would welcome your feedback. The self-guided walk can be found by clicking here, or by post from the Society, for 60p to cover postage. Click here to find out how to contact us.
