Chislehurst Society Awards 2009
As part of its 75th anniversary activities, the Society is pleased to honour five of our Chislehurst's residents for the work they do voluntarily for the community. Almost everything the Society does is through the work of individual, or groups of, volunteers. For 75 years a succession of interesteed and motivated people have worked to keep Chislehurst special. This year we thought we would remember all their efforts through the giving of awards to five individuals who have done so much for us all.
The awards were presented by Katy Boughy, one of our Councillors, who thanked the Society on behalf of the recipients.
| Tony Turner has been a member of the Society for many years, and was secretary of the Society until recently. His great contribution to Chislehurst has been in the area of planning. His knowledge of planning rules and policy, together with his tenacity have helped save Chislehurst from the worse aspects of planning folly. Tony also collected an award on behalf of Laurie Holt, who was honoured for his work on planning over many years. | ![]() |
| Donna Bompas has been the driving force behind a number of local initiatives. This year the Alun and Joy Jones Awards are in their 19th year, and Donna has been involved from the very beginning for the last ten years. Together with The Big Draw, held on the Common every year, and her own Art for Kids, Donna has motivated many young Chislehurst to appreciate the local environment and better understand its history, geography and natural history | ![]() |
You may not know Eddie and Pet Williams, but you will almost certainly have seen the animal ambulance that they operated through Willow Wildlife Trust. They respond to any crisis call to deal with injured or distressed animals or birds, and work tirelessly to treat them and release them back into the wild. One of the things that makes Chislehurst special is the collection of open and protected spaces where wildlife can live and flourish. Eddie and Pat do their work with limited funds. The Society is now providing a regular grant to support their work. |
