Bromley Road Safety Consultative Panel
A member of the executive committee attended the last meeting of the Panel that was held on 21st July.
Points of interest for Chislehurst residents were:
- Yellow lines in Logs Hill have been done but further “tweaking” is required
- Bromley Council’s contractors are still working on the Elmstead Lane and Whitehorse Hill Local Safety Schemes and will not start work on the Summer Hill scheme until these schemes are completed. This is expected by the end of August.
- The 2009/10 Local Safety Scheme covering Loop Road/Ashfield Lane was already at the public consultation stage. (The Society has been consulted on this scheme. Please get in touch if you require further details)
- A Panel member is trying to have a short section of hedge on Elmstead Lane adjacent to Broadheath Drive cut back to enable pedestrians to get by without walking on the road. It is the only section of Elmstead Lane without some sort of footway off the road. The land to the kerb edge is privately owned and it is understood from Cllr Smith that negotiations are underway to resolve the issue.
Earlier note from May meeting:
The Society was represented at the latest meeting of this Panel which took place at the Civic Centre on 13th May.
14 Residents’ Associations were represented at the meeting and other Panel members included Derrick Holmes, an LBB Road Safety Officer and David Jackman, an LBB traffic engineer.
General points of interest
- Total accident and casualty figures for the Borough as a whole are down year on year between 2005 and 2007
- The new Tesco store in Homesdale Road is very short of car parking spaces. The company has bid for the adjacent vacant Gas Works site but this has been rejected. They are expected to try again.
- Future Council sponsored events include a Walk to School week from 19th to 23rd May and Bike Week from 14th to 22nd June
- In June the Road Safety Unit will visit Primary Schools to conduct road safety demonstrations
- “Which?” magazine visited the Child Car Seat Centre in Nightingale Lane to see how it operates. It’s services are free to Bromley residents. To book an appointment call 0208 313 4498
- The Road Safety Team, together with the Police and Fire Service will be carrying out road safety stops throughout the Borough to check speed, mobile phone usage and the use of seatbelts. Depending on the circumstances, offenders will be offered a formal chat with a Road Safety Officer or an immediate penalty notice.
- All associations were asked by the Chairman whether they were prepared to participate in a survey asking whether their residents agreed or not with the proposal that a 20mph speed limit be enforced on all non-priority roads in their area.
- On 16th June a “Crash Day” will be held at Ravensbourne School. The Police, the Fire Service and the Ambulance Service will mock-up an accident and will then demonstrate a formal accident investigation followed by a Coroner’s Court.
Points specific to Chislehurst
- A final report on the proposed Traffic Safety Scheme at Elmstead Lane is expected to be produced by the Consultants within 2 weeks. The proposal will go to resident/public consultation by the end of June. Work is expected to start during the summer and to be completed before the next financial year.
- The Society tabled 4 traffic issues raised by members:- 1/ Summer Hill,2/ Loop Road into Heathfield Lane, 3/ the junction of Perry Street and Beaverwood Road, and 4/ parking at the junction of Beaverwood Road and Hoblands End. Measures to combat problems with 1/ and 2/ could be implemented and the Society will monitor progress through the Panel. Issues 3/ and 4/ are unlikely to be resolved any time soon.
If you are experiencing traffic problems in your area which, in your opinion, are resulting in danger to pedestrians and road users alike, your first contact should be with your local councillor. For Chislehurst the councillors are:
Eric Bosshard eric.bossard@bromley.gov.uk
Katy Boughey katy.boughey@bromley.gov.uk
Brian Toms brian.toms@bromley.gov.uk
You should also send a copy of your issue to Councillor Colin P. Smith at colin.smith@bromley.gov.uk. Mr Smith is the portfolio holder for all traffic/road safety issues.
Perhaps we can raise your concerns at the Panel meetings? If so, don’t hesitate to contact the committee on membership@chislehurst-society.org.uk or leave a message on 020 8467 0900 and a committee member will contact you.
