The Chislehurst Society is one of the UK’s largest civic societies. As a registered charity, we are dedicated to preserving and enhancing the unique character of Chislehurst for current and future generations.
Our work spans six key areas:
1. Planning
We review and respond to local planning applications, advocating for development that respects Chislehurst’s heritage, environment, and community needs.
2. Amenities
We support improvements to public spaces, transport, signage, and infrastructure that enhance everyday life in Chislehurst.
3. Education
We collaborate with local schools and educators to promote civic awareness, environmental responsibility, and historical understanding.
4. Heritage
We celebrate and protect Chislehurst’s rich history, from its architecture and landscapes to its cultural traditions.
5. Environment
We champion sustainability and biodiversity through initiatives that protect green spaces and encourage eco-friendly practices.
6. Grants
We offer financial support to local groups and initiatives that align with our charitable aims. You can apply for a grant from the Chislehurst Society here.
Chislehurst Commons
The Chislehurst Society is proud to be the legal owner of Chislehurst Commons, a cherished natural asset at the heart of our community. This ownership ensures that the Commons are preserved in perpetuity for the people of Chislehurst.
Managed in partnership with the Chislehurst Commons Conservators, the Commons span over 180 acres of woodland, heath, and open space. They provide a vital habitat for wildlife, a peaceful retreat for residents, and a living link to Chislehurst’s natural heritage.
Our stewardship guarantees that the Commons remain protected from development and accessible to all — a lasting legacy for generations to come.
Our Trustees
The Chislehurst Society is governed by a dedicated board of 12 trustees, each bringing a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to the community. Together, they oversee our strategic direction, ensure we meet our charitable objectives, and uphold our values of transparency, inclusion, and stewardship.
Our trustees come from diverse professional backgrounds — including planning, education, conservation, law, and community development — and share a common goal: to keep Chislehurst a great place to live. They meet regularly to review progress, approve funding, and guide our work across all six operational areas.
